DHgate's checkout has a habit of confusing people. You type a promo code and get a message saying it was applied, yet your total doesn't move. Or you get "The code has expired" for a code you found yesterday.
We test DHgate's checkout every month while building DHgate Auto Coupon, so here is what is actually going on, and how to fix each case.
1. "Applied code…" but your total didn't change
This is the most common one, and it isn't a bug.
DHgate accepts one promo code per order, and at checkout it often applies discounts for you already: the best store coupon from the seller and a DHcoupon (a platform coupon from your account). When you type a code, DHgate compares it with what's already applied and keeps whichever discount is bigger. In our testing, a weaker code still gets a message saying it was applied, but the order summary keeps the better discount.
Fix: look at the DHcoupon line in the order summary before and after entering a code. If nothing changed, your existing discount was already better. Try a code with a higher value that your order qualifies for, or keep what you have.
2. "The code has expired"
DHgate's sitewide promo codes are monthly. A new set goes live at the start of each month, and last month's codes stop working, usually around the end of the last day of the month (Pacific time). Many deal sites keep old codes listed long after they end.
Fix: use this month's codes. Our DHgate coupon codes page lists the current month's codes with their end date, and updates automatically when the new month's codes are published.
3. Your order is below the minimum spend
Every DHgate monthly code has a threshold, for example US $10 off orders of US $100 or more, or US $25 off US $300 or more. Below the threshold the code won't apply.
Be careful when you're only just over a minimum: other discounts on the order, such as a store coupon, can reduce the amount that counts toward it.
Fix: pick the biggest code your order clearly qualifies for. If you're close to the next tier, a small addition you need anyway can unlock a noticeably bigger code.
4. It's a new-customer code
Each month DHgate releases a few codes for new customers only, typically with low minimums, such as US $3 off US $5. They only work on a new account's first order.
Fix: if you've ordered before, use a regular sitewide code. On our codes page, new-customer codes are clearly marked.
5. You're shopping in another currency
DHgate's monthly codes are set in US dollars. If your checkout shows another currency, DHgate converts both the discount and the minimum spend, so a US $100 minimum might look like about C$140 or €90.
Fix: convert the minimum into your currency before choosing a code, or switch the site to US dollars to compare directly.
6. A code is already on the order
Because DHgate allows one promo code per order, a code you entered earlier (even in a previous visit) can still be attached. In our testing, DHgate remembers the code on the order when you reload the page.
Fix: check the order summary for an existing code before typing a new one, and compare the totals.
7. "Network exception, please refresh and try again"
This message usually means your checkout session has gone stale, for example if the checkout tab sat open for a long time. Every code you try will fail with the same message until you refresh.
Fix: refresh the checkout page, or go back to your cart and click checkout again, then re-enter the code.
8. A typo or stray space
Codes copied from a web page sometimes carry a trailing space or a look-alike character.
Fix: type the code in capitals by hand. DHgate's monthly codes follow a pattern such as DH2026NOVSAVE10, so a mistyped month or year is easy to spot.
The fastest fix: let an extension try them
Checking minimums, currencies, new-customer rules and the existing DHcoupon by hand is fiddly. DHgate Auto Coupon, our free extension, does it at checkout in one click:
- it uses this month's DHgate codes;
- it only tries codes your order qualifies for, biggest first;
- it compares your total and keeps whichever result is lowest, so situation #1 sorts itself out;
- if the checkout session has expired, it tells you to refresh instead of failing quietly.
It's free on Chrome, Edge and Firefox, sends nothing back to us, and never places an order.
Quick checklist
- Code is from this month
- Order meets the minimum (in US dollars)
- Not a new-customer code, unless it's your first order
- Checked the DHcoupon line before and after
- Refreshed the checkout if you see "Network exception"
- Typed exactly, in capitals
